Ana Brandt Workshop

August is typically a busy month for photographers with weddings, seniors, and all the other portrait work that client's love to do outdoors during Michigan summers. Nevertheless, we had a great turnout for the all day workshop featuring Ana Brandt from outside LA. Ana is a maternity and newborn photographer who's work has featured celebrity clients such as Ian Ziering of 90210. Ana openly shared with us about her photographic journey and how it has led her to a very specific market for which she is passionate. Too many photographers try to do it all, but Ana explained how she found her niche and stuck with it to be successful. During the afternoon, we participated in a mini shoot with a pregnant model and learned several tips and techniques for making a woman feel beautiful at the most sensitive time of her life!

June Contest Winner

The theme for June was Reflections, and this was the winning entry by Sarah MacKinnon of S.MacK Photo & Design. Here's her story behind this image:

"As Greg mentioned during his presentation last night - It is not always wise (if ever) to practice a new technique during an actual session or wedding. Get out there and practice, practice, practice. That is exactly what I was doing when I created this image.

Me and my flash (Canon 580EXII) have yet to come to some sort of 'happily ever after' working relationship. It is pretty much just along for the ride, tucked into my bag, going wherever I go with my camera. Doesn't see much action at all because of our lack of communication.

"Just set it on TTL" is an answer I've heard often when I've asked about how to master that piece of equipment. I'm old school. Couldn't EVEN tell you what the heck TTL is or how to use it.
Hand me a flash meter and I'll work at it from that angel.

On this day, I was hanging out with my model waiting to get into the studio that I share with two other photographers. We wandered to the unfinished side of the building and thought we'd shoot around with whatever was available until the studio became available. We had window light from the left and the 'just along for the ride EXII' from the right.

Add the flash, take a reading, drag the shutter, adjust settings, try again. Looks too 'flashy', change the settings, drop the power, change the angel, try again and again and again until we got what we wanted/liked. Practice, practice, practice.

Post production included a little NIK NIK here and a NIK NIK there and a couple of la-de-da's.

I'm certainly not going to brag about my 'working relationship' with my off camera flash yet. I still have a long way to go before I think I'll feel fairly confident with that gizmo.

I'm thrilled that my image was "The Chosen One" last night and I am thankful that my niece is a very patient model when she gets those calls asking, "Hey, want to come hang out and pose for me while I try out something new?" Thank you Leah!

Competition Winners

A big huge "Congrats!" goes out to Jayne Wirebaugh and Kari Douma for winning the amateur judge print competition this year. Their photos received top honors for Best of Show chosen by a group of non-photographer judges.

How often have you heard from a judge at a normal print competition, "It's a nice photo, and I'm sure the client loved it, but it needs more for competition." The judges used in this competition were some of our clients instead of the usual critical PPA type judges. So what these judges (clients) were looking for was somewhat different. Hint: they love big smiles and cute babies!

I heard a couple of times from our client judges, "I'm not sure what it is, but I just don't really like this photo." My guess is that there might have been technical issues with the images, meaning that they were breaking too many of the "rules." To me, it's just a reminder that although rules are made to be broken, the rules play an important part in our images.

Our clients really are our ultimate judges. They're the ones that pay our bills and keep us in business. This event was a great way to hear what our clients are saying about our images when they look at them with a critical eye.

Monthly Competition

This month's winner for the monthly competition was Jodi Jarka. The theme for May was "Perspective." We're used to seeing the world at eye-level, so this theme was a reminder that as photographers we can show things from a different angle, or perspective. It's important for us to see more creatively.

Jodi's winning image, which she could've probably used for next month's competition, features an interesting angle of her client. The rounded mirror gives a fish eye look to the image. Images like this are all around us; we just have to see them!

Gregory Schrader is not your typical photographer, therefore he does not have the typical story of how he came to own a photography studio. What a great time we had in Detroit! Many PPWM'ers made the trek across the state to see Jerry Ghionis and Sandy Puc speak on their Power of Passion tour.

It was reaffirming to see so many of my colleagues spend the time and the money to better themselves and their businesses. That's really what PPWM is all about: improving our skills and making good friends.

Several of us had photo-ops with Jerry and Sandy, and a few of us got a glimpse into life on the road by seeing the inside of one of the tour buses courtesy of Paula from Silverlake Backgrounds.

The mirrored ceiling on the tour bus provided this perspective!

Voting on by-laws

The PPWM board members have reviewed our bylaws and would like to propose some changes. At our next PPWM meeting, we will be voting on changes to our bylaws. These changes to the bylaws will be voted on April 18 at 7:00.

Here are the proposed changes:

Article 4 Section 3 currently states: “ Meetings of the board of Directors shall be held quarterly”

Proposed change: “Meetings of the board of Directors shall be held no less than quarterly.”

Article 5 Section 3: currently states “Applicants for Active membership must be submit to the Board of Directors of the association, a completed, authorized membership application, with the Code of Ethics, hereinafter stated signed in ink, an exterior and interior photograph of their studio, a stationery letter head, a business crd, a yellow pages listing, a list of their studio hours, and brief essay detailing their experience in photography and their goals and plans of the future.”

Proposed change: “Applicants for Active membership must be submit to the Board of Directors of the association, a completed, authorized membership application, with the Code of Ethics, hereinafter stated signed in ink.”

We would like to remove:

Article 5 Section 4: “ Section 4 - The applicant must be sponsored by two (2) members of the Professional Photographers of Western Michigan who are familiar with his of her work and sincerity.”

Jason Aten Workshop

It was awesome to see so many new faces at our meeting last night for Jason Aten's program on Starting Out Right. Even though there was tons and tons of great information about the business side of photography, one of my favorite nuggets was how Jason used an awesome app on his phone called "Evernote." He uses this to synchronize his business life on the road including taking a snapshot of his receipts for his bookkeeper. It's brilliant; I've been playing with this all day!

January Print competition

Our print competition is coming soon! The date is January 10, 2010. Remember you have to have your entries to the hotel by 6:00 pm, and you must pay your PPWM membership dues prior to that date. Also, make sure you note the new size rules. You no longer have to enter 16X20. We have some very talented judges coming in, so this is a great time to get some feedback! Also, this is one of the big ways to get points toward photographer of the year, and top 10 photographer. So... on your mark... get set... GO!

1. To be eligible to enter, you must be a member in good standing, and you must have paid your membership dues prior to the annual January print competition.
2. Entrant must have captured and created the original exposure.
3. The entrant’s name shall not appear anywhere on the face of the entry.
4. The following items must not appear on the front of the entry: Title, name of maker, tape covering the title or name, awards, seal or ribbons. However, titles that are an integral part of the photographic image are permitted.
4. You may enter up to four prints.
5. Only fresh images please. You may not reenter images from PPWM ANNUAL print competitions.
6. No two images of the same person or subject allowed.
7. No entry will be eligible that has been made under the supervision of an instructor or as a class assignment.
8. Print entries must be mounted on a standard mount material (double weight mat board, gator board, ¼” foam, or Sintra). Images on metal and mounted to another standard mount material, must have rounded corners. No mount that could potentially damage other entries or pose a danger to print handlers will be accepted. Masonite, glass, stretcher frames or conventional frames will not be accepted. Images of any shape and size are allowed but must be mounted on a mount board a minimum of 80 square inches to a maximum of 480 square inches, with the largest dimension no longer than 24". (Recommended mounting thickness is 1/8" to 3/8") 9. All entries must be titled. Not doing so will disqualify the entry.
10. No material may be added to the front or back of an entry that may damage another entry.

PPA rules and scoring will be used. Ribbons will be awarded as follows:
Prints scoring 80 and above will receive a blue ribbon
Prints scoring 76-79 will receive a red ribbon
Prints scoring 74-74 will receive a yellow ribbon
Prints scoring 70-73 will receive a white ribbon
A “Best of Show” ribbon may be awarded in the following categories:
(1) Portrait;
(2)Candid;
(3) Commercial
(4) Illustrative.
“Best of Show” is worth 20 points. If there is no blue ribbon print in a given category, a “Best of Show” ribbon may not be awarded for the category. The Board of 2004 decided NOT to award and “Overall Best of Show”.
Prints will be judged under the required 75-foot candles of light. (ISO 100, F16, 1 second)

Our guest speaker this month is Outdoor, Nature, and Graphic Design Artist, Stacy Niedzwiecki. Stacy offers innovative design solutions for a wide variety of clients. Her areas of expertise are reflected in a portfolio of logos, brochures, fliers, advertisements, newsletters and event promotion materials. In addition to traditional design projects, she also serves as webmaster for a number of organizations.
Although her core skills remain focused on graphic design and layout, Stacy now leverages her talents in digital photography and digital art. Her fascination with nature’s beauty has found its way through the camera lens, earning awards in many art and photography competitions. Her work has been featured in the Michigan 24/7 photography book, Whisper in the Woods Nature Journal, the Rockford Squire newspaper, Michigan Blue and Michigan History magazines, and the Explore St. Louis Official Visitors’ Guide

In August of 2009, Niedzwiecki was awarded Second Place in the Pure Michigan Photo Competition, shooting for Travel Michigan, the State of Michigan's official tourism agency.

Two of Stacy’s images were selected to hang on display at the Governor’s Residence in Lansing as part of the Governor’s Residence Michigan Artists Program in July 2008.

Her most honored accomplishment is the installation of 63 of her nature images in the permanent art collection at the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion in Grand Rapids, Michigan. These images are showcased in her first book effort, "Healing Images - A Selection from the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion" released in March 2010.

Most recently, you may have seen her exhibit in this year's ARTPRIZE 2010, "Great Lakes – Great Ships – Great Concerns".

Join us Monday, the 15th, as she speaks of her adventures and artistry.

Randy McNeilly operates a portrait/wedding/commercial studio in Shelby, North Carolina. For the last two decades Randy’s passion has been directed toward print competition. During this time he has earned the equivalent of six Master of Photography degrees, PPA Imaging Excellence Award, become an affiliate juror and his currently a jury chairman in training. In 2009 Randy became the one hundredth photographer in the world to receive the Fellowship from the American Society of Photographers.
Randy believes the best way to approach print competition is to “think like a judge.” In this program he will challenge you to do just that. In an audience participation format, the myths of judging will be laid bare, concluding with an eight step plan to make you successful.
This class will be for photographers of all levels, especially those less comfortable with the technical aspects of portraiture. Randy will use hands-on instruction to teach an analytical approach to photography. Emphasis will be placed on the thinking process going into each photograph. Students will learn a simple step by step process that will allow them to succeed at any photographic challenge.

Yes we are doing the print competition program. If you would like your images critiqued bring your top 3-4 on a flash drive and we will view them as he critiques them. If time permits, and you have more you would like him to critique, bring those along also.

As part of Woody's "The Secrets to Illustrative Portraits" co-sponsored by Allied Imaging Lab ( www.alliedphoto.com ) , Woody will conduct a Photo Safari on the same day from 1-5pm, from which will come the images that he will use to create an Illustrative Montage in the evening meeting at 7pm. President Darcy has graciously opened her home for our August event on the 16th. ProLab Express (www.prolabexpress.com) will be sponsoring a cookout before the regular meeting from 5-7 pm.
Regular meeting will begin at 7 PM. Print of the Month will be eight-opening Senior Folios or a 10 x 20 Senior collage of eight images of the same person. Two entries are allowed, one boy and one girl. Entries are judged by the PPWM membership and points are awarded toward the Photographer of the Year award.
The event for the night will be our "2nd Annual Used Equipment/Prop Sale". So... if you have used stuff to sell or are looking for equipment or props... come prepared.
We will be discussing the upcoming September "Woody Walters Safari" and follow-up event co-sponsored by Allied Labs.

David is the past president of Detroit Professional Photographers Association, Professional Photographers of Michigan and serves as a PPA Councilor. Congratulations to Karen Noel for taking top spot in our Amateur Judge Print Competition!!! We had several entries in the Wedding/Engagement and Family/Children categories. We had two perfect scores and several Blue Ribbon awards. Also, congrats to Jodi Jarka for winning the Print of the Month competition. Thanks to our volunteer judges who took the time out of thier busy schedules, and were willing to critique and comment on what they liked and disliked about the images as potential clients.

Had a great time with Scott last month! He went way beyond the typical studio lighting techniques that I've ever seen in the past... or should I say he went to the edge, teachings us how to use the edge of feathered light. Amazing what he could do with reflectors to add and subtract lighting on our volunteer subjects. He utilized various studio lighting equipment, as well as spending a great deal of time on using natural light. We also had ten vendors present to explain their merchandise and of course to offer trade show deals and door prizes.

Think Big! Why not? Someone once said “if you love your job, you’ll never have to work a day of your life.” Unfortunately, this is not completely true but the photography business can open doors and give you rewards you can’t imagine. Most people think this is for everyone else. It doesn’t have to be that way. “Think Big!” is an exploration of the diverse world of photography, marketing and client protocol. There are many facets of this beautiful art form and we will work on finding your market and creating a niche.

We will be discussing how Indigo Photographic sells large, custom framed artist portraits that keep clients coming back. This class will cover in-studio presentation for bigger sales while also sharing insights into client workflow that will provide an effective, efficient, and predictable result every time.

Print Competition!

GET READY... GET SET.... GAME ON!

Time to get ready for print competition! The competition is right around the corner... it will be here before you know it. We are off to a new year of competition... who will be in the top 10 photographers this year?? How about the photographer of the year??

The competition will be at the Comfort Suites in Comstock Park at 7:00 p.m. on Jan 18, 2010. The Comfort Suites is located at 350 Dodge St., Comstock Park. ( US131 and West River Drive) Prints need to be dropped off by 6:00. Dinner will be at 5:30 at Mill Creek Tavern - 3874 West River Drive.

Here is just a reminder of our print competition rules:

1. To be eligible to enter, you must be a member in good standing, and you must have paid your membership dues prior to the annual January print competition.
You may enter up to four prints.
2. Only fresh images please. You may not reenter images from PPWM ANNUAL print competitions.
3. No two images of the same person allowed unless treatment is substantially different.
Minimum image area allowed is 100 square inches.
4. Prints must be permanently mounted on 16x20 mount board. Creative matting may also be used, but combined thickness of print, mount and mats shall be a minimum of one-eighth inch to a maximum one-quarter of an inch.
5. The following items must not appear on the front of the entry: Title, name of maker, tape covering the title or name, awards, seal or ribbons. However, titles that are an integral part of the photographic image are permitted.
6. All entries must be titled. Not doing so will disqualify the entry.
7. PPA rules and scoring will be used. Ribbons will be awarded as follows:
Prints scoring 80 and above will receive a blue ribbon
Prints scoring 76-79 will receive a red ribbon
Prints scoring 74-74 will receive a yellow ribbon
Prints scoring 70-73 will receive a white ribbon
8. A “Best of Show” ribbon may be awarded in the following categories: (1) Portrait; (2) Candid; (3) Commercial and (4) Illustrative. “Best of Show” is worth 20 points. If there is no blue ribbon print in a given category, a “Best of Show” ribbon may not be awarded for the category.
9. Prints will be judged under the required 75-foot candles of light.

I have loved photography for 20+ years. (I took my first photography class in junior high and then I was on our yearbook staff and later was the editor of our yearbook my senior year.) When I was in college, I got a "way nicer" camera than all of my friends, who were carrying their 110s (??). LOL I actually got the original Rebel, after using my dad's EOS (??) for years. :)

From that point, I really just took pictures of all of our activities, my friends, my friends kids and then my kids, when they came along. I've always been known as the one who would have a camera along to document an event.

I worked for two different photographers (Tim Kasberger and Dan Johnson) from approximately 2001 til 2006. Then, I began on my own in 2007. All the above to say- I've really only officially been in business for a little more than 2 years.

I have been a member of PPWM for approximately 6-8 months. (Was it May or June I first came to a meeting? I'm not sure.)

I've been married to Greg for 16 years and we have 5 children, ages 3-13.

What would I bring to the board? I like to be in charge!! LOL Can you say control issues?! Just kidding. However, I do tend to gravitate toward committees and boards, etc, because I like to be in on planning, organizing events, brainstorming, etc. I'm a behind-the-scenes-get-things-done type of girl. I will bring fresh ideas, perhaps, as I'm new to PPWM and the photography industry, as a whole, but I also think that I bring some maturity (at times) and business experience (from my previous job before kids).

My website is under construction- I hope to work on it over the slower winter months and I'm also excited to start shooting in a studio space with a few other photographers in the new year!

Karen Noel, a PPWM member for two years, is a graduate of Grand Rapids Community College where she studied business and photography. She was honored as one of the Top 5 Photographers for 2009. Karen has been co-owner of Studio K2 Photography in Coopersville since 2007. She is excited about her newly renovated studio and recent decision to focus her passion towards wedding photography. Karen has been married to Josh for three years and they have a spoiled Brittany Spaniel named Mossy. "I've made a lot of great friends through PPWM and value the networking and commitment to education the organization offers. I'm excited and hopeful to serve on the board for 2010!"

Born and raised in Comstock Park, Michigan, Jodi Jarka began writing stories in elementary school. In high school, she was introduced to the visual art medium of film and video, as well as her husband! While continuing to pursue video in college at Grand Valley State University, plans were diverted and a degree in pre-law was earned instead. Upon graduation, a wedding on Mackinac Island was celebrated, and beautiful portraits created. Sadly, the next seventeen years were spent locked away in an office building working with lawyers, yet earning a steady income.

Upon the birth of her first child, and a gift of her first digital camera, Jodi rediscovered her creativity through a lens. Several years of photographing her own children, evolved into photographing families of friends. Subsequently, a new digital SLR provided even more opportunities for creative expression and development. After attending several workshops, classes and seminars, Jodi formed a small photography business, shooting primarily friends and family. The next year was spent photographing portraits and second shooting weddings, followed by a second year of both second shooting and primary shooting weddings and portraits. Taking a step in faith, Jodi resigned her position at the law firm to pursue her photography full time. Now in her third year as a business, Jodi has transitioned her business status to an LLC, creating separate identities for her portrait work (J Photography of Grand Rapids, LLC) and weddings (J Weddings of Grand Rapids, LLC), and leasing shared studio space in downtown Grand Rapids.

Because Jodi believes her photography to be a gift from God, she desires to share that gift in service to others. She frequently photographs events at her church, including a new photo directory published this fall. She also leads a photography/yearbook club at her children's school, mentoring secondary students, photographing school events, and managing the production of the 2009/2010 school yearbook. In addition, Jodi is now entering her third year as a volunteer photographer for the Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep Foundation, providing bereavement photography services to grieving families in the birth center at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI.

PPWM is another opportunity for Jodi to serve her community and peers within the industry. Over the past year and a half, she has been a member of PPWM and has enjoyed both the education and fellowship offered through the organization. As a board member, Jodi desires to contribute her ideas and years of administrative experience in the pursuit of growing the PPWM community in both its size and knowledge in this evolving industry.

After getting married almost five years ago, my wife Julie and I decided to go into the photography business. Or to put it more light and fluffy, we decided that we wanted to tell the stories of peoples’ lives through the art of photography. A lifetime Hollander, I’m a graduate of West Ottawa High School and GVSU (B.A. in Computer Science). I’ve been a member of PPA for three years and the PPWM for one.

While working in the media and communications field in 1997, John’s part time hobby of photography quickly grew into a successful business- so much so that he took things full scale in 2003, forming Coastline Studios. In addition to his ongoing photographer workshops, John has taught photography at various Universities and Colleges in the Grand Rapids area. John currently mentors students in the photographic arts as the president of the Alumni Board for Compass Film Academy. Coastline Studios is a Grace Ormonde Platinum Vendor, as well as a preferred photographer in several prestigious venues including the JW Marriott Hotel, Amway Grand Plaza Hotel and Oakland Hills Country Club.

John will be talking to us about two things... Social Networking (facebook, blog, twitter) and Processing RAW images in Adobe Bridge and Adobe Camera Raw. He will give us some shortcuts and show us some things in Photoshop CS4. You may bring your laptops and follow along, or just listen and take notes!

Presenting Wilson Sarkis on the beach of Ludington

Award-winning Detroit-area photographer Wilson Sarkis will be our speaker this Monday, August 17 in Ludington.

This will be a hands-on program on the beach in Ludington. Wilson's program will teach you about contemporary posing and taking advantage of available light.

This program is hosted by Rob and Becky Alway of Alway Photography in Ludington and Grand Haven and www.ProLabExpress.com.

Potluck dinner at the beach begins at 5 p.m. Bring a dish to pass, Pro-Lab Express will furnish the meat and beverages.

Program begins between 6:30 and 7 p.m.

DIRECTIONS: From the south, take U.S. 31 to the first Ludington exit. Follow the signs into Ludington/U.S. 10. Travel west on U.S.10/Ludington Ave. Continue until the avenue ends and turn right onto Lakeshore Drive/M-116. Go four blocks and turn left into the entrance of Stearns Park beach.

Charles will be coming to us all the way from Charleston, South Carolina! He is known for his amazing ability to tell a story with his camera. The title of his program is "Shut up and shoot!" For this month’s letter from the president, I want to focus on business. As photographers, a lot of us lack the use of the left side of our brain! For most photographers the creative part of our job is easy. It is the logical side (the left side of our brain) that is more difficult.

For 2009 I have been focusing a lot on Business. In a hurting economy, a lot of businesses are closing. I want to run my business in a smart way. While I was at the PPA convention in Phoenix, I took a sales and marketing class. I know that these types of classes are not as popular as the fun creative classes, but as business owners we need to also focus on the things that teach us how to make our business successful.

PPA offers a program to it’s members called SMS - Studio Management Systems. SMS helps photographers increase their profitability. SMS offers sound business and financial advice and guidance, bookkeeping services, in-depth, hands-on business workshops, online business seminars, and other online resources. They also have 2 and 3 day workshops that cover Pricing for Profit, Managerial accounting, Sales techniques, Branding, and much more. There is a free resource in Grand Rapids that I can’t believe more people don’t know about or take advantage of. It is SCORE. SCORE is headquartered in Herndon, VA and Washington, DC and has 370 chapters throughout the United States and its territories, with 11,200 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business counselors. SCORE was founded in 1964. The Grand Rapids chapter is located downtown on Pearl Street.

SCORE is free and confidential. SCORE volunteers are successful entrepreneurs and executives who love business and want to share their knowledge with you, so you can succeed too. SCORE offers face to face and online counseling. They have business workshops in person and online. You can have the SCORE volunteers mentor you, and there is no limit on mentoring. You can get help as you request answers to specific questions.

I recently went to a SCORE one on one counseling appointment, and also their business workshop. (There is a small fee for the business workshop to pay for materials. When I went it was $40.) The business workshop talked about making a business plan, doing research in your target market and for your target client, and implementing what you are learning. At the workshop we also learned that the Grand Rapids Public Library has a business consultant, who has access to a computer program that studies demographics, and helps you make smart business decisions.

At the one on one counseling, I got more specific answers to MY particular questions. I had questions about hiring employees or subcontractors, Sole Proprietor or LLC, Tax questions... The counselor that I talked with was very knowledgeable. If he didn’t know the answers to my specific questions, he told me how to find out.

SCORE will council you on anything to do with business... from business plans to marketing to employees...etc. They even have a trained Quickbooks advisor to help you with Quickbooks. March letter from the President

Here is March's letter from the President!

Well, there is no doubt that times are tough. The plight of the economy has his us, and has hit us hard. So, I want to ask you, what are you doing to help the local economy? Are you making any conscience decisions about it? Or, are you just going on with your daily life, hoping that it will get better?

I have made a conscience decision to help OUR LOCAL ecconomy. How am I doing this? I am choosing to shop locally. I am choosing to purchase everything that I can from a local business. Sometimes that means paying more.

From a photography business standpoint, there are many local businesses that we can support. We have three great Michigan labs that have business memberships at PPWM. They are Allied Photographic and Imaging, JD Photo Imaging, and Prolab Express. I have chosen to keep my printing at a Michigan company. Why send it out of state when you can get it done locally?

We also have some great camera stores in Grand Rapids. I have chosen to buy all my camera gear and supplies at Norman Camera. They really know their products they sell, and they do it with great customer service. I know that I could probably find a product for a couple dollars cheaper online, but it doesn’t come with the customer service that Norman Camera gives me. I feel better knowing that I am helping MY LOCAL economy. There are also several other local camera stores in the area, including The Camera Center, Marks Photo and Video, and Lakewood Photo and Imaging.

One of the other local companies I support is Great Lakes Albums. I use Renaissance albums, and I order them through Great Lakes. I know they have quite a range of albums including flush mount, self mount, and traditional. Call them and see what they have!

Do I buy everything locally? No. I wish I could say I did. There are a few things that I have found that I still purchase from companies that are not local. But, I do think about everything I buy. I ask myself if I can buy that product locally. If I can, I will. I want to challenge you to do the same, not only with your business, but your personal life also!

Cliff Mautner Seminar!

We had a GREAT seminar with Cliff Mautner on Monday this week. We had a good turnout with guest as far away as Detriot and Chicago. Cliff is a nationally recognized speaker and photographer, and we were fortunate enough to have him come to West Michigan for a seminar.

Cliff taught us reception lighting techniques as well as great techniques for shooting in full sun on the afternoon of the Wedding!

We are reviving something old... the president's letter. I am going to attempt to write a letter to our group every month to encourage and inspire you! Well, here goes the first one:

The President’s letter

Today for my first president’s letter, I want to focus on education. I just recently got back from the Professional Photographers of Michigan’s annual convention. It was 4 days of learning, networking, and having fun.

I started the convention by watching print competition. The competition started Friday night at 7:00, and then picked up again Saturday morning. I sat in the dark for about 12 hours, just watching and learning.... learning by the scores that were given for prints. I love print competition, and I can’t tear myself away!

Then, on Sunday through Tuesday, I sat in on speakers, learning things like marketing to seniors, how to get emotion out of your wedding clients, photoshop tips and tricks, and much more.

I once heard someone compare the photography industry to a horse race. This is what he said: “Look at a horse race. How much is the first place prize? How much is the second place prize? The difference in the purse (prize) from first place to second place is HUGE. The first place gets a large compensation for winning, and the second place only gets a small amount for coming in second. Now look at how close the race is. Sometimes the eye can’t even tell who won. They have to rely on high speed cameras to see who’s nose was across the finish line first.”

What is going to put you across the finish line first? Who will win the grand prize? It is those who are taking the initiative to further their education. A lot of photographers don’t want to take the time or spend the money to go to classes, workshops, or seminars. Photography is an ever changing industry, especially with digital photography. We need to keep current on the equipment, trends, and computer programs. Because if we don’t, our competitor will, and they will finish a nose ahead of us.

It is hard to justify where to spend your money in the tight economy. I understand times are tough. But, those of you who are members of PPWM have already taken that first step, and I congratulate you for that. Keep on learning and growing...... I hope to see you all at the all day program in March with Cliff Mautner. He is an amazing photographer who will teach us how to see light like never before. Don’t miss it!

I am excited to announce that we have a new membership level available for PPWM Membership geared to Aspiring Photographers.

The Aspiring Membership is $75 and is specifically designed for photographers that may be just starting their business or even just thinking about taking their hobby to the next level.

PPWM is a great way to make business contacts, attend fantastic programs featuring well known professional photographers, form lifelong friendships with other photographers who are passionate about their craft.

You can enter at the Aspiring Level for one year. After a year you will need to renew as a Active Member which does require that you have obtained your sales tax license.

The 2009 PPWM board members have decided not to print a monthly newsletter, but instead, update this blog on a regular basis. After all, who has the time to read a newsletter? We're too busy reading each others blogs! Having said that, we all still believe it's important to stay in touch and communicate with one another. Please check this blog regularly... who knows, you might learn something really interesting!

Below are a few questions I asked Kari today...enjoy!

Do you have a retail space or home based studio?
I had been working out of my house for the last 6 years, and I just moved into a studio space in Grandville. I love the new space! Make sure you come to our Feb PPWM meeting to check it out!

What is your favorite subject to photograph?
I get asked this question a lot. I really don't have a favorite "subject", but I have a favorite "type of subject". I love doing all sorts of portraits. I love the newborn baby, so sweet and innocent. I love the toddler who is full of energy. I love the families who want to display their family bonds with each other. I love the senior who is trying to make a statement of who they are at this time of life. I love the excitement, love and emotion of weddings. Some people I photograph are doing so just because photography is expected of them. It is something they have to do, and they don't really care for it. Others are excited about the session, and love getting their portraits done. I love clients who love photography! I get excited when they get excited about how things are going. People who are excited and have a lot of fun ideas are my favorite type of client to photograph.

When you take a short break from editing, what do you like to do?
I love forums. Being self taught, I have learned almost everything I know from forums. My favorite forum is Open Source Photo. I love to just browse and learn... and help others. I think we need to look at this as a journey in life. When I first became a photographer, I asked a lot of questions. I am sure that some people rolled their eyes at me because of the newbie questions that I asked. But, that is how I got to where I am today. Someone took the time to answer me. So, now I try to answer other people's questions if I know the answers when they ask on the forums. I have also been getting sucked into Facebook lately too! So, I start that export out of Lightroom, or batch process a folder in Photoshop, and I hit the forums!

What is the most valuable thing you've ever learned at a photography seminar? The most memorable seminar I went to was by Jeff and Julia Woods at PPWM about 4 years ago. That seminar gave me a jump in my business. The thing that hit me most during that seminar was the pricing information. Julia went into how to figure out the cost of goods sold, and what % that should be of your total price. It was an eye opener for me. I think at that time I was charging $4 for a 4X6 and $12 for an 8X10. It really woke me up to what it took to be a BUSINESS. I just saw Julia woods again while I was at PPA, and it really inspired me to look at my pricing and business again! I am planning on going to a Studio Management program by PPA, or a workshop with Ann Montieth on business. I think as artists, we are always concentrating on how to get our skills elevated, and we forget about the business part of it!

My favorite thing to do on a weekend off is……….
go camping with my family! I don't get too many weekend's off. Between weddings, editing, and my kids sport events, the weekends "off" come far and few between. But, we love to camp, so I make sure I schedule a few weekends of camping with my family!

List 5 things you love about your photography career…
1. I love that I have the flexibility to schedule things when I want. If I want to help out at my kids school, I can. I can schedule my appointments around my personal life. 2. I love the gratification when people love their portraits. Our business is such a personal and emotional business. I love to see the tears when a bride views her wedding portraits. I love to receive an email from the mother of a two year old who was delighted that I captured the personality of her child. 3. I love the challenge of pressing the shutter at just the right moment... when the rambunctious child looks up with a sparkle in their eye, when the bride and her father are dancing and the father lovingly glances at his daughter as a tear rolls down his cheek, when the newborn baby picks his head up off his mothers shoulder as if to say "Take my portrait!" 4. I love that I can provide financially for my family with a job that I love to do! 5. I love the to stretch the artist in me by continually challenging myself to do something different. My wedding assistant and I love to go into a wedding and say, "What can we do to challenge ourselves today? What can we do different that we haven't done before?"

How long have you been a member of PPWM?
I have been a member of PPWM for 4 1/2 years.

How has being a member of PPWM benefited you?
PPWM has benefited me greatly! When I first joined PPWM, I joined because I wanted to learn. I was a new photographer, who was hungry for knowledge. I was learning everything I could, as much as I could, as fast as I could. In my mind, PPWM was another method to "feed" my photography hunger. I now realize that the networking and relationships I have formed in PPWM are worth far more than the tangible information I was learning. We refer customers to each other when not available, and have become great friends! I know that if I ever needed anything, any one of my colleagues would be there for me in a heartbeat. As a wedding photographer, that is priceless.

If you could have any super power what would it be?
I would fly! I would soar through the air!

Wow it was really great to see so many people at print competition last night! I miss being able to come to every meeting. I saw some new faces, met at least one visitor... thanks for coming Kevin... and saw some people I haven't seen in awhile. It was great to see you all.
I am so proud of all the people who entered last night, especially the first-timers. You have some beautiful images! I've been entering print competition for several years and I want to encourage you to use it to your advantage. You worked hard to tweak and print those images... so display them in your studio with your ribbons attached. Clients will notice your hard work, no matter what color ribbon. Your ribbon is your award for a job well-done. If you used a client image for comp, let them know (you should probably have gotten permission before you printed) and give them a copy of the print to thank them for allowing you to use their image. They will love that, and will tell their friends. Blog about your experience. List your accomplishments on your website.
I would also like to encourage you all to consider print competition at the Professional Photographers of Michigan convention ... and then Professional Photographers of America. You've already put the hard work into it, why not? The judges gave you some constructive criticism, and more importantly, some suggestions to improve your print. More than a few of you could take your images from good to great if you just darkened or lightened this or that area, or took care of the banding, or improved your presentation...made your mats BLACK .....seems like they were stuck on black mats ;-).
If you can't bring yourselves to enter in Michigan (and possibly win $500) I encourage you to attend PPM convention on Saturday February 7 and sit in on the print competition. You can learn a lot... and every bit you learn will help you improve your art, and your business!
And while you're there, sign up for some ... or all ... of the seminars. The PPM board worked really hard this year to bring a superior line-up of speakers ... some of the best in our business... from all over the nation, and even a young gun from Australia. Print Competition!

The competition will be at the Eberhard Center at 7:00 p.m. on Jan 19, 2009. HERE are directions and parking information. Prints need to be dropped off by 5:30. Dinner will be at 5:30 at Bobirino's, located in the B.O.B. You can either walk from the Eberhard parking lot, or drive and pay for parking near the B.O.B.

Here is just a reminder of our print competition rules:

1. To be eligible to enter, you must be a member in good standing, and you must have paid your membership dues prior to the annual January print competition.
You may enter up to four prints.
2. Only fresh images please. You may not reenter images from PPWM ANNUAL print competitions.
3. No two images of the same person allowed unless treatment is substantially different.
Minimum image area allowed is 100 square inches.
4. Prints must be permanently mounted on 16x20 mount board. Creative matting may also be used, but combined thickness of print, mount and mats shall be a minimum of one-eighth inch to a maximum one-quarter of an inch.
5. The following items must not appear on the front of the entry: Title, name of maker, tape covering the title or name, awards, seal or ribbons. However, titles that are an integral part of the photographic image are permitted.
6. All entries must be titled. Not doing so will disqualify the entry.
7. PPA rules and scoring will be used. Ribbons will be awarded as follows:
   Prints scoring 80 and above will receive a blue ribbon
   Prints scoring 76-79 will receive a red ribbon
   Prints scoring 74-74 will receive a yellow ribbon
   Prints scoring 70-73 will receive a white ribbon
8. A “Best of Show” ribbon may be awarded in the following categories: (1) Portrait; (2) Candid; (3) Commercial and (4) Illustrative. “Best of Show” is worth 20 points. If there is no blue ribbon print in a given category, a “Best of Show” ribbon may not be awarded for the category.
9. Prints will be judged under the required 75-foot candles of light.

I wanted to take a second to thank everyone at PPWM for their great reception for my program this past Monday. The reception committee was fantastic.. the speaking venue could not have been better.. and your group was attentive! I appreciate all of the great questions and comments during the program. The dinner that night was great.. it was nice to see some old friends and make some new ones... Hope I can come back in a year or two and do another program.

I worked hard to incorporate fresh images, information about our group, the 2009 program calendar and an updated membership list (with links).

There is still plenty of space for more images, so send them to me at kim@studiok2photography.com and I'll try to publish them on the site as soon as possible. Thanks so much to everyone who has already contributed. It's my goal to change them quarterly, so start a PPWM folder now as you are working up your images and it will save you time when I ask for new images :)

Next year we have John Pottenger from Coastline Studios coming to speak at one of our Monday night meetings. Well, John also does photoshop classes. So, if you are looking for some photoshop classes, check him out! Here is a class he has coming up soon!

New Adobe Photoshop Classes!

Coastline Studios is proud to announce two separate Photoshop classes to help you improve your efficiency, creativity and productivity in Adobe Photoshop CS3 & CS4. It has been our experience that Photoshop is best learned in small doses with time to process after each lesson. By splitting the workshop into two days with time between each class, we believe this will maximize your learning potential and ability to implement the material into your everyday workflow.
These classes can be taken individually or as a combo package. Here is an overview of the classes being offered:

CLASS #1: “The Entrepreneur”

When: Friday, November 7th – 1pm to 5pm
Cost: $200 (or $350 for both classes)

Overview: This class will go over many of the new features of CS4 and how to use them as well as cover using Bridge to speed up your workflow and perform some advance image editing techniques using Adobe Camera Raw (ACR).

Class Highlights:
- A complete overview of many of the new features of Photoshop CS4 including:
1. Multiple tools and enhancements in ACR.
2. The new Dodge and Burn.
3. Content Aware Scaling.
4. Other misc tweaks and improvements.
- Streamlining your workflow - How to edit hundreds of images in one day, and deliver only your best work to your clients without spending weeks editing... all using Bridge and Camera RAW
- Master your use of Bridge: A complete overview of the program from top to bottom.
- Learn to use applicable shortcuts to save you time and energy.
- Advanced Adobe Camera RAW (ACR) Techniques including:
1. An in depth overview of many of ACR’s tools, sliders and features and how to use them effectively and creatively.
2. Color correction on difficult images.
3. Using the new localized corrections brush and gradient tools in CS4.
4. Saving presets to maximize editing time and build a consistent look to your images.

CLASS #2: “The Artist”

When: Friday, November 14th – 1pm to 5pm

Cost: $200 (or $350 for both classes)

Overview: This class will focus on mastering your editing skills in Photoshop and reveal time saving and creative techniques using multiple retouching tools, Actions, Layer Masks, Layer Blending Modes and Adjustment Layers.

Class Highlights:

- A creative approach of a complete makeover on a portrait (eyes, hair, teeth, wrinkles etc…)
- Exploring the liquefy tool to slim, enhance or correct a bad pose.
- Explore layer blending modes to enhance the presentation of your image.
- Creating and working with “Actions” and Batch processing to speed your workflow, and add your unique creative look to your images and brand.
- Master the art of using layer masks.
- Advanced techniques in performing Black & White or sepia conversions.
- Learn to use applicable shortcuts to save you time and energy.

Computers with Photoshop installed will not be provided and it is suggested that you bring a laptop with Photoshop CS3 or CS4 to the class to maximize your learning experience. While there will be many hands-on exercises throughout each class, a laptop with Photoshop installed isn’t required to take the class, but is strongly encouraged.

Hey all!
Just wanted to share about a little marketing venture Cyndi Higgons of Inspirations Photography and I (Deb Sportel of Sportel Photography) did together last week. Cyndi got an offer to set up a photo "studio" of sorts during an event in our home town of Caledonia. She nicely invited me to be a part of it and help her out. We set up in an old bank building with straw bales, cowboy hats and amazing window light to do impromptu portraits of anyone who wanted. We also walked around and took candids of several of the activities. We did all this to introduce ourselves to the community, and to guide people to our websites. As far as a big money-maker, we're not holding our breath. But as far as marketing, even one person was worth it. All it cost us was time. Just thought I'd share in case it could help anyone else.

Beach Seminar!

I believe in education.... challenging my mind in the area of photography. It is a way for me to stay competitive in the photographic industry! So, earlier this week some PPWM members and I headed up to Ludington for an all day beach photography workshop that was put on by Wilson Sarkis. Rob and Becky Alway hosted the seminar. Here we are on the beach in Ludington with a bride model. Here is our awesome group of photographers having fun, shooting this bride!And a couple images to show you what we were getting!Here is Wilson shooting another model by this cool beach house!And here is a model engagement couple. Wilson also encouraged us to think outside the box a little with family portraits... Here a couple of the class participants acted as the family for our demonstration, along with the models that Wilson brought who were the "kids" in the background. The "mom" is our very won Darcy from Flashback Photography! Wilson brought some great models! This image had a reflector kicking some light back into the models back. This helped create a little more drama to the light.

And of course a jumping shot!
Our class ended at 4:00, but Wilson invited us to stay for a "live" session that he had set up for that evening. This was a couple that hired him for their wedding, and this was their engagement session. Even though Wilson didn't have to continue to teach us... he kept on teaching.

Here is the group that I drove with from GR. My great friends, Jill Wolfert, Me, Lisa Lenderink, Jean Orians-Rowley, and Sarah Woltjer.We have Wilson scheduled to come to PPWM next year in August! It will be a GREAT seminar!

(He even said he would bring some Models too!)

You’re comfortable with your lighting, you believe you
have chosen the right Background, and your client actually
wore what you suggested from the clothing Consultation.

So, what’s the next step? …The Correct Posing! Not to just
sit there and smile with your hands in your lap, but moving
and positioning your client to make the most femininely
flattering or masculine image possible.

Mary Anne will show you shat clothing stores have known
for years. She will show you what artists have known for
centuries.

“Mini Posing Aerobics” before each photo session.

communicate with your client, producing the most
slenderizing and effective posing results possible.

Mary Anne McAtee photographed her 1st wedding at the age
of 17 in 1969, and the rest is history. She has been known for
her elegant and dramatic posing ever since.

2 years ago George McAtee (Mary Anne’s Husband of 30 years),
built Mary Annea new studio on their 13-acre property
overlooking 350-acre Gilletts Lake in Eastern Jackson County.
Previously, McAtee Photography was located in a commercial
location in Michigan Center, Michigan. The new location offers
many outdoor shooting areas that change with the seasons.

Mary Anne has received many awards including; PPA Showcase
and Loan Collections, Several PPM ‘Court of Honors’, Fuji
Masterpiece, many times being in the ‘Michigan’s Top Seven’
Master Photographers, MTPPA ‘Best of Show’ (3 different years)
and most recently at Mid-East State in Ohio, the prestigious
Kodak Gallery Elite Award in the Portrait Category for 2008.

Mary Anne uses kindness, humor, and sincerity in getting the
most from her clients in the photo session. Many clients
afterward comment and smile on how they felt comfortable
and enjoyed their photo session. Resulting in happy returning
clients and generous orders.

PPWM LOGO Contest

PPWM LOGO Contest
Objective: To create a logo for the
Professional Photographers of Western Michigan
General Info: Submissions will be passed on to the
PPWM Board for Judging. Creativity, Originality,
Readability, use of space will all be used to measure
the logo's merit. Logos should include the phrase
PPWM “Professional Photographers of Western Michigan”
somewhere in the design. Beyond that, it's all you.
Winning Logo will be used on all PPWM info,
advertising and Web-site. Logos should be submitted
in JEP or PDF- file format.

"Amateur Judged" Print Competition

Plan on attending PPWM 16x20 Wedding Print
Competition. April 21, 2008 at the Days Hotel,
Downtown Grand Rapids. Entries must by
submitted by 6:00. Dinner at 5:30 in the Hotel.
We will only be having the Print Competition. It
was voted by members last month to NOT have
the Wedding Album Competition per Bi-Laws.
We will have Brides and Mother as our Judges.
It gives you a insite to what our Clients want.
Rules :
1. Only members in good standing may enter.
2. You may enter up to four 16x20 prints.
3. Only fresh images please. You may not
re enter images from any previous PPWM
AMATEUR judged competition.
4. No two images of the same person allowed
5. Minimum image area allowed is 100 square
inches, and outer dimensions must measure
16x20.
6. Matting is allowed, but total thickness may
not exceed one-quarter inch.
7. Studio sample prints will be accepted,
but any studio identification must be concealed.

You can purchase a WhiBal or you can buy a BalanceSmarter or a Digital Calibration Target. There are a lot of choices out there! Michigan Triangle Professional Photographers Assoc. is hosting Ben Chen April 8.
The program, "Fast Track Weddings," begins at 1:00 at the Best Western Midway in Lansing (just off I-69).
They plan to break for dinner 5:00 to 7:00 (reservations required). At 7:00 Chen will present "Off Camera Lighting" until 10:00 pm. Cost for non-MTPPA members is $50 and dinner is $20.

I had an amazing day in Detroit last week. I went to a seminar by Jerry Ghionis. Who is Jerry Ghionis you ask? He is a well known photographer from Australia. He travels the world to speak at national events. He was on his way to the national WPPI convention in Las Vegas, and he made a stop in Detroit for a seminar for us. Kim and Karen from K2 studios, and Debra Sportel from Sportel Photography were there also. It was a very long day. We left at 6:00 am, and got back last night at 12:30 am. Here are a few images I took with my Point and shoot camera for the day so you can see what we did!

Here is Jerry speaking to us. He was an excellent and funny speaker! He kept our attention for 13 hours!

He showed us slide shows of his work that inspired us, and told us the secret on how he captured such great images! He talked about make the extraordinary out of the ordinary as far as location and lighting was concerned.He taught us some dramatic lighting tricks.He also showed us some posing tips. These men acted as the groom and grooms men! My next wedding isn't for a little while, but I am so excited for it after such an inspirational seminar!
